ARTIST BIO

Andrea Wicklund was raised in the remotest corner of Wisconsin, in a house on a hill among cornfields, by a schoolteacher mother and an engineer father who at one time led a company that makes recycling trucks. Before she reached her teens, she was splitting logs at the family woodcutting camp and operating the riveting machine in their basement workshop. Fortunately, neither of these activities cost her any fingers, and she was also able to begin drawing at the side of her uncle, a wildlife painter. Andrea momentarily pursued a career in law before rejecting that path as inadequately sleep-depriving. She chose art instead. Armed with a degree in illustration from San Francisco's Academy of Art College, she duped a confused receptionist into letting her into an art director's office. Two months later, her first illustration appeared in Spin magazine. Andrea's work has since appeared in Rolling Stone, Vibe, the Society of Illustrators Annual, etc. She has twice attended the Illustration Academy, and has been invited to lecture there and at Academy of Art College. Current projects include concept work for the videogame and entertainment industries. Andrea lives in San Francisco, where she works out of a studio in the Tenderloin district, so named because the police officers who patrol its rough streets were once given a pay bonus that let them afford costlier cuts of meat. She chose the location not for its plump cops, but for its seedy environs, which seemed an appropriate backdrop for her ongoing, sordid affair with some guy named Art.
